BRASILEIRO - MAY 30TH, 2008
LIVE CONCERT IN TORONTO, ONTARIO

On May 30th, 2008 the Berkeley Church at 315 Queen Street East will be hosting an event called "Brasileiro". With the tagline, "the side of Brasil you haven't seen yet", the show will bring together for the first time...five exhilarating groups from Toronto's Afro-Brazilian music and dance community!

2008 is the inaugural year for what will be an annual event. The goal of "Brasileiro" is to show a Canadian audience the musical richness of a country (Brazil) that many people usually only associate with beaches, the Amazon and Carnival. You will be amazed by the musical talent, colours and cultural richness!

Founded by Brazilians Maninho Costa and Bola, Brasileiro sets the stage for plans to build a movement in excellence of Brazilian music, dance and song tradition in Toronto.

Maracatu Nunca Antes

An afro-brazilian percussion and performance troupe that plays the roots music of traditional Maracatu and complements it with their own styles and sensibilities. The voice, direction and performance of bandleader Aline Morales are at the forefront of Nunca Antes' mystical and high-energy show. While their greatest school of influence is Maracatu Estrela Brilhante de Recife, various groups and traditions inspire their approach, the afoxés and côcos of North East Brasil to the 6/8 rhythms ofWest Africa. This is the world citizen's sound for a multi-cultural planet of raw energy and acoustic dub.

Samba Squad

Created by award-winning percussionist Rick Shadrach Lazar, Samba Squad is an innovative bateria (drum corps) born out of the Brazilian tradition of batucada and samba schools. This vibrant 20-plus member tear-down-da-house percussion posse takes you on a dance-till-you-drop tour of global grooves. Samba Squad shows bust out in energy and excitement, as cutting edge innovations fulfill the beat migrations created by the African Diaspora: the musical roots of Afro-Brasil, Afro-Cuba, North and West Africa, as well as elements of Urban Funk and Hip-hop, are dropped into a seething cauldron to produce a raw organic dance part-tay.

Batucada Carioca's colours of blue and white give homage to Portela which is one of the oldest and most traditional samba schools of Rio de Janeiro.
